Energy Information Administration releases monthly stats

By Erin Voegele | February 28, 2012

The U.S. Energy Information Administration released its latest monthly biodiesel statistics Feb. 27. According to the administration, U.S. biodiesel producers manufactured 97 million gallons of fuel in November 2011, which is equal to the figures reported for the prior month. Total U.S. biodiesel production for the first 11 months of 2011 is reported to be 742 million gallons, which is a significant increase over the 292 million gallons produced during the same period of 2010.

According to the EIA, imports dropped during November to 66,000 barrels. In October the U.S. imported 82,000 barrels of biodiesel. Approximately 628,000 barrels of biodiesel was imported during the first 11 months of 2011. This is an increase over the 512,000 barrels recorded for the same period of 2010.

Exports in November held almost steady when compared to the prior month. The U.S. reportedly exported 131,000 barrels of biodiesel in November, down slightly from the 132,000 barrels exported in October. Total exports for the first 11 months of 2011 are estimated to be 1.7 million barrels. This is a significant decrease when compared to the 2.4 million barrels of biodiesel that were exported during the same period of 2010.

According to the EIA, the U.S. consumed 96 million gallons of biodiesel in November, which is an increase over the 83 million gallons reportedly consumed in October. Total consumption for the first 11 months of 2011 was 664 million gallons. The comparable consumption level for the same period of 2010 was 215 million gallons.

Nathan,Fair enough, but let's say that our armrefs are getting even 800 gallons per acre, that's still 9 Yellowstones or roughly 19 million acres. No matter how you slice it, that's a heck of a lot of land. Also, my point about the effect on food supply was more related to the garagantuan amount of food farmland needed to make biofuels based on the RFS. EPA's calculations about the effect on food prices have always been their weakest argument. Even ballpark calculations in this respect are exceedingly difficult. In the end, as I see it, the major point about shifting away from food-based biofuels is really important and it would not be that difficult to mandate a phase out after 2022. At that point, all of those corn ethanol facilities could easily be converted to cellulosic ethanol facilities. Heck, they could even shift to only using corn STOVER at that point and let the grain go into the grain supply chain. Doesn't that just make sense? You avoid all the food vs. fuel issues regardless of what they may or may not be. In most cases avoidance is not the best policy, but in this case it sure as hell is.

How can the industry produce 742 million GALLONS and yet export 1.7 million BARRELS of biodiesel ? My math is rusty but ... Des Shaw

Yup - slightly rusty math - 1.7m BBls is on 71.4m gallons. The bigger question is how the EIA data produces & imports 768million gallons of fuel Nov YTD and yet the industry created RINS equivalent to 951million gallons in the same period...
