Latest EIA numbers show biodiesel consumption on the rise

The U.S. Energy Information Administration released its latest Monthly Energy Review in late December. According to data featured in the review, biodiesel consumption continued to grow throughout the first nine months of 2011. The report contains data on biodiesel production, consumption, trade and stocks through September 2011.

The EIA’s monthly biodiesel overview shows that production for the month of September was down slightly when compared with production levels the month prior. The administration estimates that 83 million gallons of biodiesel were produced in September. The production level for August was 89 million gallons. However, the year-over-year production level has continued to trend upwards. U.S. biodiesel producers manufactured approximately 549 million gallons of biodiesel during the first nine months of 2011. The production levels for the same periods in 2010 and 2009 were reported to be 255 million gallons and 324 million gallons.

Biodiesel consumption also increased in September 2011, with the EIA reporting that the U.S. consumed approximately 97 million gallons of biodiesel. This is a significant increase over the 72 million gallons that was consumed one month prior. Consumption is also up on a year-by-year basis. Approximately 486 million gallons of biodiesel was consumed in the U.S. during the first nine months of 2011. The relative consumption levels for the same periods in 2010 and 2009 were 183 million gallons and 195 million gallons.

The U.S. has also continued to export more biodiesel than it imports, with the EIA reporting a net import level of -959,000 barrels (-40.28 million gallons) during the first nine months of 2011. During that time, the U.S. imported 479,000 barrels of biodiesel, and exported approximately 1.44 million barrels.

Regarding stocks of biodiesel, the EIA reports that the U.S. had approximately 1.2 million barrels of biodiesel on hand in September. That is a decrease of 462,000 barrels compared to the stock of 1.66 million barrels that was reported for August.
