Members of the public will have the opportunity to learn more about biodiesel at three free workshops planned as part of an educational campaign led by the North Carolina Solar Center and North Carolina State University, in conjunction with Wake Technical Community College. The initiative, supported by the U.S. DOE's Clean Cities Program, is offering 36 workshops over a two-year timeframe.

A total of five biodiesel workshops were offered in 2010 as a part of the program. The 2010 biodiesel events were held in Columbia, S.C.; Fresno, Calif.; Baton Rouge, La.; Kingston, R.I.; and Bozeman, Mont. The initiative is now entering its second year, with biodiesel workshops planned in Ohio, New York and Wisconsin.

According to Anne Tazewell, Transportation Program Manager with the NC Solar Center and NCSU, each of the three workshops will feature a presentation by WTCC's Rich Cregar, an automotive technologies expert with more than 25 year of experience with alternative fuels. Each workshop will also feature a selection of local speakers, such as fleet operators, who will share their experiences regarding biodiesel. Each event is free and will include information on biodiesel, its various fuel blends, chemical properties, production, distribution and best practices. Attendees of the initiative's 2010 workshops included fleet operators, educators, students, government representatives and fuel marketers.

The three biodiesel workshops scheduled for 2009 include:

- Jan. 20, 11:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m.; Reynoldsburg, Ohio

- May 18, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m.; Flushing, N.Y.

- Sept. 14, 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m.; Milwaukee, Wis.

In addition to biodiesel workshops, the program also offers education opportunities for ethanol, natural gas and propane, and fuel economy and idle reduction. A full schedule of workshops along with registration information can be found on the project's website, www.AltFuelEd.org.
