Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond, R-Mo., received a lifetime achievement award from the NBB for his involvement in the biodiesel industry. During a celebration in honor of Bond, NBB CEO Joe Jobe said Bond is the industry's "longest-standing champion in making our nation's first commercially available advanced biofuel a reality."

Speaking at the event, Bond said, "In 40 years of public service, I have seen many ideas come and go. Biofuels, or generating energy from crops we have in abundance, is an idea that is here to stay. It makes sense environmentally, it makes sense from a business perspective and it means we don't have to import as much energy from foreign sources."

In a statement on the award, the NBB notes that in addition to supporting federal efforts like the biodiesel tax incentive and the RFS, Bond also helped with a four-year U.S. DOT research program focused on feedstock development, engine testing, fuel quality and glycerin uses. He also helped secure a DOT biodiesel education project, a Federal Transit Authority program for using biodiesel in urban transit buses, and a DOE program on algae's future potential in biodiesel production. Jobe also noted that it's because of projects like these that biodiesel is now one of the most tested fuels on the market, adding, "Today the Big 3 automakers all support B20…which is in part due to Senator Bond's leadership in biodiesel research."

Bond, who is retiring, will be deeply missed, Jobe told Biodiesel Magazine. When asked who will fill his place, Jobe said, "Despite the political gridlock that Congress finds itself in right now, biodiesel does have a broad base of bipartisan supporters in Congress," adding, "Few if any have been the kind of long-standing, heartfelt champions for biodiesel as Senator Bond. But he has laid significant groundwork for new generations of elected leaders that he has influenced."
