Amidst the worst economic times in the biodiesel industry's short history, a new refinery, built around the cooperative model, is starting production in Temecula, Calif. Promethean Biofuels Cooperative Corp., a 1.5 MMgy production facility transesterifying used cooking oils into quality methyl esters, is holding its grand opening ceremony on Feb. 19 at 10 a.m.

A press conference will be held followed by refreshments, a ribbon cutting, raffles, and tours of the plant and the production of its first road-grade batch of biodiesel. Most of Promethean's new facility is made of repurposed or reused material. The 17,000-sq.-ft. plant is located adjacent to a community recycling facility, which the co-op said helped during the plant construction and allows a place for consumers to drop off used cooking oils and other recyclables.

The cooperative told Biodiesel Magazine that its plant was designed as a chemical blending and off-specification product rework facility. Its biodiesel production process uses alternating high temperature and high pressure, and employs a deep-vacuum process. Its fuel production is batch with continuous purification. In addition to running its own plant, Promethean undertakes design/build projects for other biodiesel producers.

"With our cooperative biofuels model, we are ideally suited to collaborate with citizens, businesses and [government] officials in an effort to lead the way to a clean, community-based, innovative, renewable, sustainable energy production and consumption way of life," said Todd Hill, Promethean's managing principal and founder.

Promethean is also seeking community service volunteers and interns for various projects at its Temecula biodiesel plant. The co-op stated, "Our cooperative business model lends well for students to complete community service or intern hours."
