Paratherm launches new transfer liquid

Biodiesel producers often use heat transfer technologies in glycerin recovery, distillation and purification applications, as well as in the transesterification reactors, so new products like Paratherm Corp.'s high-temperature heat transfer fluid could be a staple for this evolving industry.

"Biodiesel plants are going to be using biomass, algae and other materials to make biodiesel that are not typically used as feedstocks today," says Andy Andrews of Paratherm, headquartered in Conshohocken, Penn. "Other companies with newly patented processes that revolve around pyrolitic or super-critical methods might need a fluid with higher temperature capabilities for their 'envelope-stretching' applications."

Paratherm HR heat transfer fluid is "formulated for closed-loop liquid phase heating to 650 degrees Fahrenheit in fired heaters and 675 degrees in waste-heat recovery and full convection heaters," Paratherm said, adding that compared to its closest competitor Paratherm HR experiences half the amount of degradation when maintained at 700 degrees. With proper maintenance, the fluid has a lifespan of five years to eight years.

"We developed this fluid to have higher temperature capabilities because there are those processes that are always running a heat transfer fluid at its maximum capacity," Andrews said. "Even if they are within the range, slight variations [near the threshold] can affect the health of the fluid and it can start to degrade. With Paratherm HR there is a little more room at the high end for variations that won't damage the fluid."
