NREL 2013 Renewable Energy Data Book includes biofuel statistics

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has released its 2013 Renewable Energy Data Book, which features statistics on U.S. and global renewable energy generation, renewable energy development, clean energy investments, and technology-specific data and trends. The report is produced and published annually by NREL on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

"The 2013 Renewable Energy Data Book is an important resource for policymakers, analysts and investors worldwide," said NREL Energy Analyst Sean Esterly. "Renewable energy trends are displayed in an accessible format for a variety of audiences."

Regarding biofuels, the report states that biodiesel was the fastest growing biofuel type in 2013. U.S. production increased by 64 percent, while global production increased 17 percent. U.S. biodiesel production reached 1.8 billion gallons in 2013, a volume that is 360 times greater than production in 2001. The U.S. led the world in biodiesel production in 2013, followed by Germany, Brazil, Argentina, France and Indonesia. Germany produced 819 million gallons of biodiesel in 2013, while Brazil produced 766 million gallons. Production in Argentina was 608 million gallons, followed by 528 million gallons in France, and 528 million gallons in Indonesia.

The report also indicates that 13.3 billion gallons of ethanol was produced in the U.S. in 2013. U.S. production accounted for 57 percent of the world’s ethanol production, followed by Brazil at 27 percent. The European Union, China and Canada produced a respective 6 percent, 3 percent and 2 percent of the world’s ethanol in 2013. Brazil produced 6.27 billion gallons of ethanol in 2013, with production in the European Union reaching 1.37 billion gallons, production in China at 696 million gallons and production in India at 545 million gallons.

Iowa had the most U.S. ethanol production capacity in place in 2013, with nearly 3.96 billion gallons, followed by Nebraska with 1.9 billion gallons. Illinois, Minnesota and South Dakota had 1.39 billion, 1.13 billion and 1.02 billion gallons of capacity, respectively.
