British Columbia has announced that CAN$10 million (US$8 million) in Innovative Clean Energy Fund grants are available for new liquid biofuels production capacity in the province.

The funds can be used to produce biodiesel or ethanol using both conventional and second-generation technologies, said Alec Tully, public affairs officer for the province's Ministry of Technology, Trade and Economic Development. The projects must demonstrate that the fuel will result in significant reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions relative to conventional petroleum-based fuels, based on a full life-cycle assessment. The closing date to apply for the funding is 2 p.m. PST on Jan. 7, 2009.

According to Ida Chong, Minister of Technology, Trade and Economic Development for the province, the ministry's goal is to help reduce GHGs in the province by 33 percent by 2020. This funding supports the provincial government's priorities, which include meeting new requirements under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Renewable and Low Carbon Fuel Requirements) Act for a five percent minimum annual average renewable content in gasoline and diesel beginning in 2010 and helping to meet British Columbia's commitment to further reduce life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions from all transportation fuels by at least 10 percent by 2020 through a low-carbon fuel standard.
