Alterra Bioenergy to produce bio-additive

Macon, Ga.-based biodiesel producer Alterra Bioenergy has introduced its new bio-additive product line, Alterra DieselMaxx, in conjunction with its biodiesel production and sales operations.

Alterra Bioenergy, which currently operates a 15 MMgy biodiesel plant in Gordon, Ga., and a 30 MMgy facility under construction in Plains, Ga., developed the industry's first diesel additive. DieselMaxx, which is not petroleum-based, is a lubricant that is intended to improve diesel engine performance while reducing pollution emissions, according to Alterra Bioenergy President and Chief Executive Officer Wayne Johnson.

"[DieselMaxx] is a high-grade bio-additive for diesel fuel," Johnson said, noting that the DieselMaxx product should generate added revenue for the company. "It also allows people to get access to the benefits of biodiesel fuel in a different distribution methodology."

According to Johnson, DieselMaxx is being produced in line with Alterra Bioenergy's biodiesel production operations and marketed by its distribution partners. The product has already been distributed in Colorado and around 200 locations in Georgia for the last 60 days. It's being sold at truck stops and auto parts stores in gallon jugs that will treat about 400 gallons of fuel each, he said.

Tests conducted by the University of Georgia have found that DieselMaxx produced a 10 percent reduction in emissions of nitrogen oxide, a primary pollutant that comes from automobile exhaust. A two-week test on UGA campus bus fleets also provided encouraging results for increases in fuel efficiency.

Johnson noted that with winter fast approaching, DieselMaxx could serve as an optimal diesel additive with its added cold-flow enhancers, added cetane mixture and other stabilizing elements that are adaptable to extreme cold temperatures.

"We took high quality methyl ester and we added some additional ingredients to create a superior high-grade bio-additive," Johnson said. "So far, we've gotten real good success with it."
