Florida-based alternative energy development company Renew Energy Resources Inc. and The Doe Fund, a New York-based nonprofit, announced Sept. 16 they will partner to produce biodiesel from waste grease in New York City. The partnership will be called Legacy Oil, a Renew subsidiary. Renew Energy will contribute their biodiesel expertise to the project, while The Doe Fund will collect and deliver waste cooking oil and trap grease to the facility through its RWA Resource Recovery program.

According to Alex Edwards, Renew Energy's chief executive officer, his company has been around for years and this year re-branded itself as an energy company. The 5 MMgy facility built by Legacy Oil will be located within New York City's five burrows. By using local waste oil as a feedstock and selling the biodiesel locally, Renew Energy has found a way to reduce distribution costs normally associated with biofuels traditionally produced in the Midwest, Edwards said.

Renew Energy has selected a location for its New York City biodiesel refinery, and is in final negotiations to secure that location. According to Edwards, construction will begin as soon as possible. The company has also identified the specific technology that will be used in the production process, however, Edwards said he's not at liberty to make specific location and technology information public at this time, but hopes to release that information within the next few weeks.

Renew Energy plans to use the New York facility as a repeatable model that can be used to construct facilities within other metropolitan areas.
