BQ-9000 dominates the market

By | September 16, 2008
The option to buy biodiesel from a company certified under BQ-9000 is becoming more widespread as six biodiesel producers and marketers recently achieved BQ-9000 certification. Thirty-three certified producers represent more than 75 percent of the biodiesel produced in the United States. This is good news for the industry as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory showed in a recent study that BQ-9000 certified producers "consistently hit the mark" on quality.

Downs Companies of Corona, Calif., became the 15th certified biodiesel marketer. Downs Companies (Downs Oil Co. Inc. and Downs Energy) is a third-generation, family owned biodiesel and fuel additive marketer. They are joined by the following biodiesel producers in achieving BQ-9000 certification:

Piedmont Biofuels of Pittsboro, N.C., is a co-op that focuses on small-scale biodiesel production, making fuel mostly from waste vegetable oil by self-described "fuel quality nuts."
Beacon Energy Corp. of Cleburne, Texas, purchased a biodiesel plant in Cleburne earlier in 2008 where they furthered their commitment to "easing America's dependence on petroleum-based fuels" by producing and marketing biodiesel.

Lake Erie Biofuels of Erie, Pa., opened the first large-scale biodiesel production facility in Pennsylvania with a 45 MMgy capacity plant using multiple feedstocks.
Paseo-Cargill Energy of Kansas City, Mo., started producing biodiesel this year at its 40 MMgy capacity facility with an integrated glycerin refinery.

Ag Processing Inc. (AGP) of St. Joseph, Mo., located its 28 MMgy biodiesel plant adjacent to its soybean crushing plant. This plant joins AGP's Iowa-based biodiesel plant in achieving BQ-9000 certification. Its biodiesel is branded "SoyGold."

"It's good for the entire industry when so many companies make the commitment to producing the highest quality biodiesel, meeting the most rigid ASTM specifications," said Leland Tong, chairman of the National Biodiesel Accreditation Commission, which is the governing body for the BQ-9000 program. "I think that it also demonstrates the market power of BQ-9000."
