While overall, biodiesel plants in the United States are producing at about 20 percent of their capacity, Grapevine, Texas-based GreenHunter Biofuels LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GreenHunter Energy Inc., announced Aug. 25 that it has achieved over 50 percent of its 105 MMgy nameplate production capacity. The GreenHunter biodiesel facility is currently the largest biodiesel facility in the United States.

Located on 22 acres near Houston, the GreenHunter Biofuels facility is on the site of a previous waste oil and chemical treatment plant. GreenHunter Energy purchased the $12 million site in 2007 and began construction in August 2007. The project was completed in June.

"The fact that we have very quickly reached 50 percent and are going toward nameplate capacity as quickly as possible is reflective of a unique strategy which is being feedstock agnostic, and being able to use lower quality feedstocks and still produce high-quality biodiesel," said Jack Zedlitz, GreenHunter Biofuels director of corporate communications, adding that he believes the number of gallons produced will continue to go up.

Although the facility has the capabilities of utilizing a variety of feedstocks, according to Zedlitz, it is mainly using chicken fat and beef tallow. "Being able to source feedstocks globally and sell products to global markets, we think, is a model that is undeniably appropriate right now," Zedlitz said. "And we have quickly executed our plan to do so, while keeping our capital expenditure to cents on the dollar compared to the rest of the industry."

"Successfully achieving 50 percent of nameplate capacity at such a highly technical refinery is a testimony not only to the quality of this unique asset, but to the outstanding work conducted by our plant personnel during this start-up period," Senior Vice President of Engineering and Technology Bruce Baughman said.
