Sustainability Task Force expands reach

By | August 08, 2008
In an effort to include more diverse stakeholders in addressing sustainability issues, the NBB Sustainability Task Force is developing two initiatives. "We're looking for perspectives on sustainability outside the biodiesel (industry)," said Emily Bockian Landsburg, chair of the NBB Sustainability Task Force and chief executive officer of Philadelphia Fry-o-Diesel.

The task force is forming an advisory committee of representatives from groups that address or are impacted by sustainability issues. Non-profit organizations, government groups, think-tanks and academics with specific expertise in areas such as Third World development, hunger alleviation, biodiversity, energy security, sustainable development and wildlife protection can provide valuable feedback on sustainability communications and public opinion.

In conjunction with the NBB's November board meeting, the task force will invite experts from groups such as these to participate in a symposium on sustainability as it pertains to the biodiesel industry. They will engage in a dialogue highlighting sustainability priorities as well as share opinions and garner constructive guidance. The goal is to facilitate greater collaboration among the biodiesel industry and other sustainability stakeholders.

A second initiative opens up the lines of communications via an online forum at The forum will be accessible and interactive so individuals outside of the task force can play a larger role in shaping NBB's sustainability measures.

"In essence, sustainability is really about looking at the whole picture over the long term," Bockian Landsburg said. "If only one group is at the table, how can we look at the whole picture? The objective of these initiatives is to bring a wider audience together to collaborate on these issues."
