Algae harvest test underway in New Mexico

By | August 08, 2008
The Center of Excellence for Hazardous Materials Management in Carlsbad, N.M., successfully performed what it called a "commercial-sized" harvesting experiment at its pilot-scale algae pond. The algae were extracted from 12,000 gallons of water, and the pond produced two grams of algae for each liter of water. The oil content of the algae was approximately 30 percent on a dry-weight basis. The center is cautiously optimistic that algae oil could be produced for approximately $80 per barrel.
