By Erin Voegele | August 23, 2021

The U.S. EPA has released data showing 1.69 billion renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in July, up from 1.63 billion RINs that were generated during the same month of last year.

Nearly 45.16 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in July, including 35.14 million generated for compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) by domestic producers, 7.06 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 2.72 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, and 240,726 generated for liquefied RNG by importers.

Total D3 RIN generation for the first seven months of 2021 reached 267.18 million. That volume includes 210.01 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 38.83 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 17.37 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 724,195 generated for liquefied RNG by importers, and 244,278 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.

More than 355.82 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in July, including 219.24 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 109.19 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 23.07 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 2.57 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 1.75 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers.

Total D4 RIN generation for the first seven months of this year reached 2.58 billion. That volume includes 1.44 billion generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 642.28 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 343.58 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 142.47 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 4.86 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by importers, and 4.65 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers.

More than 24.26 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in July, including 10.34 million generated for ethanol by importers, 8.86 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 2.16 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 1.89 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 741,000 generated for LPG by domestic producers, 299,115 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, and 52,209 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers.

Total D5 RIN generation for the first seven months of 2021 reached 110.52 million. That volume includes 54.31 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 23.21 million generated for ethanol by importers, 15.17 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 13.88 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 2.19 million generated for LPG by domestic producers, 1.25 million generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 509,546 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

Nearly 1.27 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in July, including nearly 1.27 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers and 505,684 generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities.

Total D6 RIN generation for the first seven months of this year reached nearly 8.11 billion. That volume includes 8.02 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 75.85 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 6.33 million generated for ethanol by importers.

No D7 cellulosic diesel RINs have been generated so far this year.

According to EPA data, more than 11.06 billion RINs were generated during the first seven months of 2021, up from 10.16 billion generated during the same period of 2020.
