CCCC starts biofuels program

By Jessica Sobolik | November 20, 2007
Central Carolina Community College, which has campuses in three North Carolina counties, will become the first school in the state to offer a biofuels associate degree program.

The two-year program, called "Alternative Energy Technology: Biofuels," along with related certificate programs, will start educating and training a future biofuels workforce in the fall of 2008. The school will work closely with the biofuels industry and the newly formed North Carolina Biofuels Center to determine workforce training needs, according to Andrew McMahan, CCCC biofuels coordinator. "Biofuels degree graduates will qualify for numerous positions in the industry," he said. "Employment opportunities include, but are not limited to, plant technician, plant manager, lab technician, sales manager, process coordinator or business owner."

The college's Chatham County campus in Pittsboro has offered biofuels classes since 2002. Rachel Burton, a graduate of the school's sustainable agriculture and automotive mechanics programs, was the first to propose teaching a biofuels class.

In early October, the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges awarded CCCC with two BioNetwork Fund grants totaling more than $140,000, which will be used to expand biofuels courses for the degree program, as well as noncurricular biofuels education for the public.
