Appalachian State students win EPA award

A team of students from Appalachian State University (ASU) in Boone, N.C., recently won the U.S. EPA's 2006 P3 award for its work on biodiesel and sustainability. The P3 Award-which stands for People, Prosperity and the Planet-was introduced in 2004 to give college students the opportunity to help develop sustainable practices that empower communities to overcome environmental challenges.

The ASU team, one of six winning groups, won the P3 Award for its biodiesel project called, "Closing the Biodiesel Loop: Self-Sustaining Community-Based Biodiesel Production," a closed-loop demonstration system of manufacturing biodiesel using solar thermal heating; wastewater bio-remediation; a passive, solar greenhouse; methanol recovery; soap making; and composting.
